Filler Dissolving Overview
Celebrity culture has both popularised and demonised fillers, and many people now mistakenly associate fillers with overly plumped, pillowy faces, 'trout pouts' and 'duck lips' There is no denying the impact the Kardashian's have had on the use of dermal fillers. If you have had filler treatments and are no longer happy with how they look. Or you have been to a practitioner who was maybe not so
adequately trained and you have lumps of nodules, or filler migration, you may wish to dissolve your filler.
In the correct, highly-skilled, highly-qualified hands, this can be done using an enzyme called hyaluronidase, or Hyalase, which is a prescription-only medicine. This enzyme is injected where the filler has been placed and dissolves it, leaving the area free of hyaluronic acid filler.
If you wish to have the area re-filled, you would need to wait at least two weeks before having further filler placed in the area treated with hyaluronidase.
Hyalase/hyaluronidase is a prescription-only medicine. The potential side-effects and risks of filler dissolving treatments can be significant. It is important that you see a medical practitioner for filler dissolving treatments. This only works for hyaluronic acid-based fillers.
Botox acts by blocking acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junctions between the nerves and the muscles. Acetylcholine is a chemical that is responsible for causing muscle contraction, therefore, blocking it leads to temporary muscle paralysis.
Botulinum toxin is not only used for treating unwanted wrinkles, i
t is also used for:
- Treating facial asymmetry
- Unwanted facial muscle activity, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm
- Migraine
- Spasticity
- Cerebral Palsy
- Hyperhydrosis (sweaty armpits).
No. it is not a dermal filler. The only similarity is that they are both hyaluronic acid gels, but the gels are completely different. PROFHILO perfuses the skin, dermal filler replaces deep subcutaneous fat and enhances bone structure. PROFHILO cannot change contours or facial shape or provide enhancement, it cannot be used to directly target fine lines. PROFHILO is solely used to trigger skin remodelling increasing skin quality and luminance.
Soft tissue fillers are an exciting way to enhance and rejuvenate areas of the face
A hyaluronic acid based filler will be used.
Hyaluronic acid is found in the connective tissue of the skin.
It is a naturally occurring product which is absorbed naturally by the body.
There are many different types of Dermal Filler. Each one is carefully selected for each patient and the area to be treated. Each dermal filler has varying levels of ‘lift’ and they all last a slightly different amount of time.
For maximum benefit, there needs to be careful assessment of the face and therefore no makeup should be worn.
Careful assessment and planning by a GMC registered Doctor
The injectable is carefully injected, using a very small needle, directly into the muscles that cause wrinkles. Several injections are usually needed at specific sites, depending on the area treated. (see diagram on treatment page).
Combination treatment may be required eg Cosmetic Fillers
Gentle pressure may be required and the application of arnica cream.
A complimentary 2 week follow up with the Doctor is then booked.
Dermal Fillers feel like a slight pinch, and you may experience a slight pressure or stinging sensation during the injection.
Each of the dermal fillers we use contain local anaesthetic so that once the injections start you also get a numbing effect.
Everyone experiences pain differently. We use a topical anaesthetic for most treatments. If required we can also use injection of local anaesthetic.
The injectable starts to work 6-36 hours after injection and maximum effect will be achieved after 7-14 days
The effect will last between 2 to 4 months before you will start to notice the muscles working and the wrinkles reappearing.
If the patient wants the effect to last longer, they will require injections around 4 times a year.
If the patient does not like the effect it will wear off between 2 to 4 months
We aim to achieve the desired effect after the first treatment but it may require one or two treatments to decide exactly what the patient prefers in order to gain the optimal effect
Repeated treatments may give a quicker result that lasts longer and therefore increases the time interval between appointments.
It is recommended to have at least two sessions (one month apart) to achieve optimum results. However, if the skin problems are severe, a third session may be advised.
To maintain the results we recommend a top-up treatment session around every 6 months.
Your practitioner will provide you with a full treatment plan and advice during your initial consultation.
No severe complications after cosmetic use of Botox have been reported in literature. However, despite the risk being very low, it must be discussed and understood
Local (Normally these are temporary) - Pain - Tenderness - Swelling/oedema - Erythema (redness) - Bruising (this can usually be covered up by makeup) - Headache (do not take aspirin)
Regional complications due to the unwanted effect of Botulinum toxin on adjacent muscles. These are self-limiting and wear off in 2-4 months
Systemic effects are rare in cosmetic usage
Anaphylaxis to Botulinum toxin, albumin or normal saline is very rare.
Therapeutic failure or non response can only be truly assessed after 14 days and before 4-6 weeks and may be due to - Persistent muscle activity - Surrounding muscle action - Static lines will not be affected - Persistent wrinkle due to dermal atrophy (thinning of the deep layers of the skin)
Conditions or factors that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment
Pregnancy
Breast Feeding
Patients trying to get pregnant
Previous anaphylaxis (allergic reaction) to Botulinum toxin and other ingredients (albumin, sodium chloride)
Neuromuscular disease (myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, motor neurone disease)
Tendency to excessive bleeding
Thrombocytopaenia (low platelets)
Haemophilia
Anticoagulation therapy
Aspirin
It is incredibly safe due to the formulation of HA. HA levels in the body are naturally balanced by an enzyme known as hyaluronidase, which breaks down the hyaluronic acid molecules. This is also the substance that breaks down PROFHILO over time, making it the least disruptive form of filler as the body is already equipped to work with the main ingredients.
There is no downtime after your treatment, but you may have some redness and lumpiness in the treated areas. This usually subsides within 24 hours. Don’t use makeup for the rest of the day as this can cause irritation.
Please plan any social occasions around your Injectable treatments, as redness, bruising and swelling can be experienced post treatment.
Please let us know if you have any planned travel in the next 4 weeks. You cannot have Injectable treatments if you are feeling at all unwell.
Please ensure that you:
Have no coldsores (if you are prone to coldsores please discuss with your treating Medical Professional)
Are not pregnant/trying to get pregnant/not breastfeeding
You must inform your treating Medical Professional about any medications or dietary supplements you are taking, some medications can adversely affect the way Anti Wrinkle Inejctions work and can increase your risk of bruising.
You must refrain from taking any painkiller medication that contains Ibuprofen (this only relates to any medication that is “not prescribed by a Doctor”). Ibuprofen may contribute to bruising and is best avoided for 7 days pretreatment.
You must refrain from taking Alcohol and Vitamin supplements including; St. Johns Wort, Fish oils, Garlic, Gingko Biloba, Vitamins A-E, these may all contribute to bruising and are best avoided for 7 days pre-treatment.
You must come with no makeup on the day of treatment, you must not reapply makeup for 24 hours in order to reduce the risk of infection or irritation at the injection sites.
Whilst the chance of risk is very low, it must be discussed and understood.
The common side effects occur within a 24 hour period after treatment. These will disappear usually within days. However, some types of dermal fillers can have side effects lasting a few weeks.
Local (Normally resolves quickly) - Pain - Tenderness - Erythema (redness) - Bruising - Numbness - Swelling for 3-5 days
Rare complications of infection and granuloma formation
Hypersensitivity occurs in 1/2000 patients
It is always best to have a complimentary 2 week post-treatment session to discuss your results with the Aesthetic Doctor.
You may have some reds bumps post treatment at the injection sites, these should resolve within a period of 1 hour.
You must place no pressure on the treatment area for a period of 8 hours post treatment.
You must stay upright for a period of 4 hours post treatment.
Make-up must not be worn for a period of 24 hours post treatment in the treated area.
Avoid alcohol, vigorous exercise and extreme temperatures for 24 hours post treatment.
If a bruise does occur it may take a few days to appear and can take up to 10 days to resolve. Arnica can be helpful in clearing bruising. You must avoid Ibuprofen and alcohol for 24-48 hours post treatment as this can increase bruising.
Your Anti Wrinkle Injections will start to take effect within 1-3 days post treatment, visible results can be seen at day 7, full results can be seen at day 14.
A feeling of heaviness in the area of treatment can be experienced in the first week post treatment, this is a result of your Anti Wrinkle Injections taking effect and your muscles starting to relax.
If this is your first Anti Wrinkle Injection treatment you will be contacted 2 weeks post treatment when the product has taken full effect to assess your treatment results, a small adjustment may be required at this stage if necessary to perfect results.

Although, smoking will not directly impact the results of your dermal filler treatment, it is advisable to avoid. This is because smoking has an effect on your bodies reaction to the procedure. This is especially true if you’ve had lip fillers, where you should avoid smoking as it can increase the risk of infection.
You should also avoid touching the area for at least four hours after the procedure.
Profhilo is an anti-ageing hydration treatment that helps boost hydration beneath the skin's surface and kickstart the natural production of collagen and elastin. It is suitable for anyone who would benefit from increased hydration, more collagen, or elastin. Typically clients are aged 30-55 and want to look younger and for their skin on their face, neck, hand, or arms to look better.
The procedure is simple. Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area up to one hour before the injections. The physician will clean the affected area and make many injections with a very tiny needle. Bruising, swelling, or tenderness is possible after the procedure, but is generally minor. Patients typically start seeing results in five days, with full results after two weeks.
Step One - Consultation and Consent
It is important to understand that Botox® is a prescription only medicine. It is a legal requirement that the consultation is performed by a prescribing practitioner and you should confirm this with them.
Step Two - The Masseter Botox® Treatment
Your jaw slimming treatment will take around 20 minutes. It should be performed by the prescriber who undertook your consultation.
Step Three - The Follow-up
It is a requirement that the prescriber is available to review the treatment if necessary. This is usually done after 2 weeks but should be sooner if there are any problems. This allows them to check that the dose administered was appropriate for the agreed outcome, and to adjust if necessary.
Step Four - The Repeat Jaw Slimming Treatment
A new course of treatment can be administered every 12 – 16 weeeks.
Even if a gummy smile is not considered a medical condition, we can still discuss what the causes of a gummy smile are. Obviously, these causes are all related to the teeth, lips, jaws or gums, which happen to be the key components that dictate a person’s smile aesthetics.
The most common causes of a gummy smile include:
Teeth that appear short and remain partially covered by gum tissue
Teeth that are small in comparison to the gums, mainly due to genetics
An upper lip that is too short to cover the gums
An upper lip that is normal in length when the face is resting, but lifts too high when smiling, hence exposing a lot of gum tissue
Gingival hypertrophy (enlarged gum tissue)
Maxillary excess (an overgrowth of the upper jaw that makes gums bulge out)
Usually, the condition behind a gummy smile is genetic, so there’s nothing you can do to prevent it.
